A PLANNING MEETING IS TO l>e held next Thursday at the home of Chancellor and Mrs. W. B. Aycock in Chapel Hill for the imminent membership campaign kick-off of the local Chamber of Commerce. Merchants Associa tion organizers of the long-pro posed Chamber say they have been very heartened by the en thusiasm and cooperation of UNC officials for this project, which they envision as a “total com munity” effort. THE FIREMEN WERE A BIT late at the annual dinner staged for the Chapel Hill firemen and policemen last Thursday. Reason was that just as the smoke-eaters were putting on coats and ties a fire alarm came in. The Depart ment spent about 45 minutes in dousing a blaze of unknown ori gin at the old Buildings Depart ment building, now being demol ished, irt the middle of the cam pus. ' ‘ r. THERE WAS NO FORMAL program at the police - firemen banquet. But Capt. Coy Durham and'Patrolman E. B. Cozart used the occasion to present to Chief Bill Blake a full-color photo-por trait of the late Chief W. T. Sloan, to be hung in .the soon-to be renovated police station. The large framed portrait was a gift from photographer Frances La vergne Johnson, with an assist on engraving by Wentworth and Sloan. THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY SEA son fruit cake derby is under way, with the Exchange, (Rubbers first away from. ..the starting gate. That-if, theExchangeites in Chapel Hill, are already approach ing both the wary and un-wary, order coupons in hand, to sell ’em fruit cakes for Christmas de livery. If similar benefit projects of past years are again pursued the campaign will soon be abet ted by the good members of the Carrboro Lions Club and the Chapel Hill Civitans. Grocery stores, it is rumored, will also sell fruit cakes this year. A COSMOPOLITAN AUDI ence Of - visitors was present at the meeting of the Chapel Hill Board of Aldermen on Monday _ night. They were students in the UNC Graduate School of Public Health from Venezuela, Pakistan, India, Japan, Cyprus, Jordan, and Thailand. At the end of the meet ing they expressed professional pleasure at having heard the news during the meeting that fluoridation of the local water supply truly appeared imminent. WHAT KIND OF TOBACCO, the wag on the telephone line asked, was that big trailer truck carrying when it crashed into the store building on Durham Road in Chapel Hill last Thursday? The punch line to his , homespun gem of the lowest form of wit: Lucky Strike, of course! inTra-party politicking is fairly rife within the fold of the Orange Young Democrats Club, Chapel Hill attorney Bob Cooper is offering for the presi dency in the elections to be held Sept. 27, and is already busy se curing commitments.
